Johnny Handsome is a 1989 suspense thriller directed by Walter Hill. Starring Mickey Rourke, Ellen Barkin, Morgan Freeman, and Forest Whitaker, the movie tells the story of small-time criminal and low-level gangster John Sedley (Mickey Rourke). Sedley, who was born with severe deformities, is mockingly nicknamed Johnny Handsome because of his facial disfigurement. Together with his best friend Mikey (Scott Wilson), Johnny plans a bank robbery. After being double-crossed by their partners Rafe Garrett (Lance Henriksen) and Sunny Boyd (Ellen Barkin), Mikey is murdered during the robbery, and Johnny ends up in prison. While serving his prison sentence Johnny is able to enter a rehabilitation program. Dr. Steven Fisher (Forest Whitaker), an empathetic and compassionate doctor, performs reconstructive surgery to give Johnny a normal looking face, he also helps Johnny receive early parole. Johnny gets a straight job working in a shipyard, and attempts to lead a law-abiding life when he falls in love with a beautiful woman named Donna McCarthy (Elizabeth McGovern). Johnny cannot, however, let go of his desire for revenge against the people who betrayed him.moreless
