Johnny Skidmarks tells the story of a crime-scene photographer, Johnny Scardino (Peter Gallagher), who is unemotional. Scardino also lives a secret life aside from his police work. He is partnered with a blackmail ring leader named Walter Lippenscott (Jaohn Kapelos). Together, they trick men by recording their activity inside hotel rooms and using the information to threaten them for favors or mafia connections. Johnny's slick ways come to a halt when he arrives on a crime scene and sees two of his friends are dead. Fearing that he may also end up dead, Johnny begins to panic. He turns to a stranger named Alice (Frances McDormand) and confides in her; he mentions his connections to the ring and explains why he fears for his life. When Johnny begins to have suspicions that Alice might be working for the Hit Man, he immediately stops confiding in her and becomes even more paranoid.
