Journey to the Center of the Earth, based on Jules Verne's novel, is a 1959 fantasy adventure directed by Henry Levin. When one of his students gives him a paperweight made from volcanic rock, Professor Sir Oliver Lindenbrook finds a mysterious message inside it from a long-missing Icelandic explorer, claiming he has journeyed to the very center of the earth via a cave hidden on the face of Scartaris, a mountain outside Reykjavik. Professor Lindenbrook seeks confirmation of the authenticity of his find from the eminent Professor Goteborg, but the latter, hunting glory, betrays his trust and decides to head to the earth's core on his own. Helped by student Alec McEwen, Lindenbrook heads for Iceland himself, finding along the way that Goteborg has been murdered; and soon the two are off on an amazing adventure underneath the world's surface - with a cheerful Icelander, the dead man's imperious widow and a duck named Gertrude for company.
