Journey to the Center of the Earth is an adventure film following Professor Oliver Lindenbrook (James Mason) on a trip to an extinct volcano and a mysterious world. Lindenbrook begins his quest after being given a piece of volcanic rock that bears a cryptic inscription by student Alec McEwan (Pat Boone). The rock leads Lindenbrook, Alec, and assistant Mr. Paisley (Ben Wright) to Iceland. They're not the only scientists hoping to discover the trail to the center of the earth, however, and the duo must be on their guard against others hoping for fame. They're joined by Carla (Arlene Dahl), the widow of a fellow scientist. She agrees to give them his supplies for their expedition, but only if they take her along. Following them is Count Saknussem (Thayer David), whose forefather discovered the passage 300 years before. He believes he is destined to make the discovery and challenges Lindenbrook and his companions as they encounter a subterranean ocean, strange flora and fauna and a sunken city. The film is an adaptation of Jules Verne's novel of the same name. The 1956 film was nominated for Academy Awards for Best ARt Direction, Best Special Effects and Best Sound.moreless
