Journey to the Sun is a 1999 drama that explores the political tensions and harsh realities in modern-day Istanbul through the friendship of two young immigrants. The film follows Mehmet (Newroz Baz), a Turkish youth from an outlying village, who works for a water company while living in a windowless room that he shares with four other migrant workers. Berzan (Nazmi Quirix), part of the Kurdish minority, sells music cassettes from a street push cart. The young men form a friendship when they both help a young Kurd being beaten on the street. When Mehmet later gets mistaken for a Kurd, he is arrested, tortured and marked as a member of the persecuted group. Released from jail, he loses his job and his room. Berzan takes him in, but Mehmet does not know of his friend's involvement with underground political groups. Writer and director Yesim Ustaoglu provides insight into the complicated world of the Middle East through this very human story.moreless
