Music and film superstars Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah duet in this gospel choir dramedy about an unlikely partnership between two strong-minded women who are forced to work together to save a small town gospel choir after budget cuts threaten to shut them down. Latifah plays the no-nonsense mom put in charge of the choir while Parton plays the choir director's widow. With a strong musical component, this inspirational film, also starring Kris Kristofferson and Courtney B. Vance, is written and directed by Todd Graff (Bandslam) and produced by the Oscar-nominated team behind The Blind Side.

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Variety

A routinely plotted competition drama in which Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton (playing her first bigscreen lead in 20 years) vie for control of a small-town Georgia church chorus.

  • 40

The New York Times Stephen Holden

A lower echelon of musical comedy hell (or heaven, if you love the hoariest musical comedy clichés).

  • 38

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert
