Julia

Movie Summary

Director:
Fred Zinnemann
Released:
1977
Rating:
PG
Julia recreates the true story of childhood friends reuniting in the politically charged atmosphere of 1930's Europe from playwright Lillian Hellman's memoir "Pentimento." Having reached an impasse with her writing and her relationship with crime writer Dashiell Hammett (Jason Robards), Lillian (Jane Fonda) accepts an invitation to Moscow for a writer's conference. A childhood friend, Julia (Vanessa Redgrave), contacts her and asks her to undertake a dangerous request to deliver funds to an anti-fascist group. The journey provides an opportunity for Hellman to reflect on their lifelong friendship, and the character of her dear friend, who has rejected a life of privilege to fight the imminent Nazi threat. The 1977 drama exquisitely captures a time and place, and explores what we are willing to risk for love. Among the remarkable cast, Robards and Redgrave won well-deserved Oscars for supporting performances. Movie buffs will enjoy seeing a young Meryl Streep in her first film role as Anne Marie, a friend of Julia's.moreless
