Released:
1995
Rating:
PG

Jumanji is an action fantasy movie about Alan (Robin Williams), who finds a board game called Jumanji which traps him in a magic jungle world, and is later found by kids Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter Shepherd. When Judy and Peter move into Alan's old house, they hear the jungle noises of Jumanji and find the board game in the attic. As they start playing, they release giant mosquitoes and crazed monkeys, and the instructions say that for things to return to normal, they must finish the game. On their next roll they release Alan, who is now an adult since he has been trapped in the game for many years. In order to make everything right, they have to survive and get to the center of the board and yell "Jumanji!", but the more they roll, the more the jungle invades their world. This hit adventure film inspired an animated series of the same name, as well as the book and movie Zathura, a space-themed board game adventure also by authorChris Van Allsburg.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Eschewing warm, cuddly imagery just as Mr. Van Allsburg's book does, the film affects a strange, artificial style that has the invasive weirdness of "Gremlins" but none of the charm.

  • 50

    Variety Leonard Klady

The screenplay, however, denies the film a solid foundation. Jumanji is diverting in a splashy , eye-catching manner, but is about as substantive and durable as filigree.

  • 38

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The film is a gloomy special-effects extravaganza filled with grotesque images, generating fear and despair.
