Junebug is a comedic drama about a young newlywed who goes to meet her husband's family for the first time. The film opens with an art dealer named Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) traveling from her home in Chicago to North Carolina in an attempt to secure a new artist for her gallery. Her husband George (Alessandro Nivola) accompanies her on the trip, and they mutually decide to go and visit his family who live nearby. When they arrive, George's family does not immediately take to her. The only one who is even friendly to her is George's brother's wife, Ashley (Amy Adams), who is pregnant with her first child. Their stay in North Carolina goes on much longer than expected because the artist that Madeleine is trying to sign refuses to make a firm commitment to her gallery. The extra time proves valuable, however, as Madeleine realizes how little she actually knows her husband and how different he seems now that she has met his family.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Carina Chocano

A deceptively simple, deeply resonant story about the inherent loneliness of family, the odds against assimilation and the enormous distances that can divide two people.

  • 80

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Junebug envelops us in texture of a world the movies rarely visit.

  • 60

    Variety Joe Leydon

Has a washed-out look that may be off-putting to auds who might otherwise enjoy the pic's uncondescending view of Southern characters and customs.
