Movie Summary

Joe Johnston

Paleontologist Alan Grant is digging with his protege Billy Brennan. At the dig site Dr. Grant is approached by Paul and Amanda Kirby, an allegedly wealthy couple who ask Dr. Grant to escort them on an aerial tour of Isla Sorna. Grant initially turns them down, but changes his mind once the Kirbys offer to fund his dig. The plane carrying Grant, Billy, the Kirbys and three mercenaries arrives at Isla Sorna. As the pilots tell the group that they will be landing, Dr. Grant is shocked and starts to revolt before being knocked out by one of the mercenaries. Dr. Grant awakens to find himself on the dinosaur filled island and the adventure of a lifetime begins.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

The sheer physical presence of these creatures is much more believable and convincing than what can be generously characterized as the film's plot.

  • 40

The New York Times A.O. Scott

All it wants to do is scare a smile onto your face, and it often succeeds. After all, how can a movie that offers Michael Jeter as a mercenary not be fun?

  • 30

    Variety Derek Elley

Game ride that makes the two previous installments look like models of classic filmmaking.

    • Ellie: So, what are you working on?
      Alan: Raptors mostly.
      Ellie: My favorite.
Alan: Do you remember the sounds they made?
      Ellie: I try not to.
Alan: Ellie, all our theories about raptors intelligence, what they were capable of, we weren't even close.
      Ellie: Tell me.
Alan: Well, we did cranial scans of a fossil skull. We found what looks like a very sophisticated resonating chamber.
Ellie: Wait a second. So we were right. They'd have the ability to vocalize
Alan: I'm convinced it's the key to their social intelligence. Which explains why they could work together as a team. They coordinate their attacks so their prey wouldn't know what was going on.
Ellie: They could talk to each other.
Alan: To a degree we never imagined. Ellie, they were smart. They were smarter than dolphins and whales. They were smarter than primates.

    • Alan: Dinosaurs lived 65 million years ago. What is left of them is fossilized in the rocks. And it is in the rock the real scientists make real discoveries. Now, what John Hammond and InGen did was create genetically engineered theme-park monsters. Nothing more nothing less.
Female Student: Are you saying that you wouldn't want to get on to Isla Sorma and study them if you had the chance?
Alan: No force on Earth or Heaven could get me on that island.

    • Paul: Dr. Grant, we're not leaving this island without our son.
Alan: Then you can go and look for him. Or you can stick with us, as long as you don't hold us up. Either way, you probably won't leave this island alive.

    • Paul: Dr. Grant says this is very dangerous territory.
Amanda: Look, maybe we should split up or something. We could cover twice as much ground.
Paul: Dr. Grant says that's a bad idea.
Amanda: Dr. Grant, Dr. Grant says th...
Paul: Well, what's the good of hiring an expert if we're not gonna use his advice?
Amanda: Yeah, except Dr. Grant isn't looking for Eric. He's looking for the coast.
Paul: Okay, fine, go ahead and scream, and then when that 'Tricycloplots' attacks you, don't come crying to me.

    • Eric: I read both of your books. I liked the first one more. Before you were on the island. You liked dinosaurs back then.
Alan: Back then they hadn't tried to eat me yet.

    • Billy: You have to believe me. This was a stupid decision, but I did it with the best intentions.
Alan: "With the best intentions". Some of the worst things imaginable have been done with the best intentions.
