Kes is a 1969 British film directed by Ken Loach and starring David Bradley, Lynne Perrie, Collin Welland, Brian Glover, and Freddie Fletcher. Based on the novel by Barry Hines entitled A Kestrel for a Knave, this coming age of drama focuses on Billy Capser (Bradley) a young boy living in Barnsley who is bullied both at home and at school. Billy is not without trouble himself, however, as he regularly steals and gets other students in trouble at school. Fearing a fate of becoming a coal miner, Billy discovers a injured fledgling kestrel and begins training it. "Kes" and Billy develop a friendship and the Billy begins to see the world in a better light. When Billy disobeys his abusive half-brother Jud, Jud does something to Kes that Billy will never forget. Kes is regularly listed by the British Film Institute as one of the greatest British films ever made.
