Kicking It is a 2008 documentary about redemptive power of soccer from directors Susan Koch and Jeff Werner. Scotsman Mel Young presides over the Fourth Annual Homeless World Cup, an event established in 2003 to raise awareness about the international problem of homelessness. Players from all over the world gather in Cape Town, South Africa to compete in a street football tournament modeled after the World Cup. Narrated by Irish actor Colin Farrell, the film follows the story of six displaced athletes from Afghanistan, Kenya, Ireland, Spain, Russia and North Carolina during the 2006 tournament. Each of these players has struggled with poverty or drug addiction and experienced life on the streets. Soccer has provided an opportunity to kick their habits and transform their lives. While these athletes each have a compelling drama in their own lives, the drama and vigor of the competition on the playing field takes center stage in this sports feature.
