King of New York is a gritty, urban, street drama directed by one of the best in the genre, Abel Ferrara. Crime boss Frank White (Christopher Walken) returns from a stint in prison and looks to get back in the game. He has his street crew go out and systematically eliminate all of his competition in the drug trade that has sprung up in his absence. He is determined to become the King of New York. The cops, led by Dennis Gilley (David Caruso) and Roy Bishop (Victor Argo), are ready to take White down permanently. Jump (Laurence Fishburne) is White's psychotic, right hand man, who makes White look like a nice guy in comparison. It also doesn't hurt that White is trying to clean up his reputation. He starts donating part of his ill-gotten gains to a local hospital in hopes of winning the hearts and minds of his subjects.
