King Of The Gypsies is a gritty 1978 family drama about a young man trying to escape New York gypsy life. Dave (Eric Roberts) ran away from his family as a teenager to escape the abusive treatment by his father, Groffo (Judd Hirsch). Dave uses his street scams to survive and begins to plan a move to California, far from his past. Then, he receives a visit from his grandfather, Zharko Stepanowicz (Sterling Hayden), also known as "King of the Gypsies." Zharko wants Dave to assume a leadership role in the family organization. Dave's father, Groffo has been always been a disappointment to his own father. The difficulties between fathers and sons dates back generations in the Stepanowicz clan. When tensions begin to develop with a rival gypsy tribe, Dave feels an obligation to protect his family, especially his mother, Rose (Susan Sarandon), and young sister, Tita (Brooke Shields), but he will have to face his father man to man.
