Kit Kittredge: An American Girl is the story of a girl named Kit Kittredge (Abigail Breslin) who takes on a journalism hobby to escape all the problems in her life. Her family is teetering on the brink of poverty and her father, Jack (Chris O'Donnell) has just lost his job. Their house is threatened with foreclosure and Jack goes off to find work. Meanwhile, her mom, Margaret (Julia Ormond) comes up with the idea of taking on baorders to help with the mortgage payments. Several odd characters like Mr. Berk (Stanley Tucci), the magician, move into the house. Kit begins to spend more and more of her time outside the house and meets Will (Max Thieriot) and Countee (Willow Smith), two kids who live in a homeless settlement nearby. When one of Margaret's prized possessions goes missing, Will is immediately blamed for the theft. It is up to Kit to collect the clues and prove his innocence.
