Kitaab is a Hindi film that centers around Babla (Master Raju), a boy who lives with his mother (Dina Pathak) in a small village. In order for Babla to attend a good school, his mother sends him to live with his sister (Vidya Sinha) and brother-in-law (Uttam Kumar) in the city. Initially he likes living in the city, even befriending another boy named Pappu (Master Titu). Together the two boys wander the city's streets, watching magic shows. Babla gets distracted from his studies, causing his sister and brother-in-law to yell at him. Realizing that no one understands him, he decides he should go back to his mother's house. He runs away and hops on a train. The Ticketmaster figures out Babla does not have a ticket, so he throws him off the train. He finds himself wandering the streets, viewing the lives of homeless people, and becoming scared. His sister and mother become worried when Babla does not return home.
