Knife in the Water is a 1962 thriller from director Roman Polanski ("Rosemary's Baby") about a young hitchhiker joining a Polish couple for a weekend excursion. Andrzej (Leon Niemczyk) and Krystyna (Jolanta Umecka) are driving to a weekend getaway when an argument about Krystyna's driving skills when a young man (Zygmunt Malanowicz) leaps in front of their car. The couple invites him to join them on their yacht trip on a lake. The young man begins to show his attraction to Krystyna, which leads to a growing competition between the two men. At first, Krystyna delights in the sparring until the argument escalates and the young man falls overboard and disappears. Andrzej tries to save the young man but cannot find him, so he swims to shore to find help. What Andrzej does not realize know is that the young man has hidden behind a buoy and is waiting for her departure. This early Polanski film brought him international attention and an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film.moreless
