Knight Moves is a thriller mystery about formerly retired chess player Peter Sanderson (Christopher Lambert). Sanderson is a chess grand master who comes out of retirement for a chess tournament; however it seems that someone doesn't want him to compete as he is set up for murder. After meeting a beautiful woman, whom he has a romantic fling with, she turns up dead, body painted and blood drained. Naturally Sanderson becomes the prime suspect in the murder, but then receives a call from the actual killer, taunting him to try and figure out who he is. To try and retain his freedom and bring justice to the killer, Sanderson cooperates with the police investigators as well as psychologist Kathy Sheppard (Diane Lane). With the help of Sheppard and Police Captain Frank Sedman (Tom Skerritt), Sanderson is on a race to try and clear his own name before those around him become more suspicious of him as the murders continue.
