La Bete Humaine is a 1938 drama film that centers around train engineer Severine (Simone Simon), the wife of a train engineer, Roubad (Fernand Ledoux). When Roubad learns that his wife's godfather, Grandmorin (Jacques Beriloz), has tried to seduce her, he becomes enraged and plots to kill him during a train ride. He forces Serverine to assist in the murder. What they do not initially realize is that Roubad's co-worker, Jacques Lantier (Jean Gabin), has witnessed the brutal crime. Jacques had his eyes set on Severine for quite some time. Knowing this, Severine takes advantage of him by beginning an affair. She hopes that by having relations with Jacques, he will keep his mouth shut about the murder and help her kill her husband. Severine does not realize that Jacques has a secret of his own.
