La Cage Aux Folles is a classic 1978 French farce, based on the stage play of the same name, and later remade in America as 1996's The Birdcage. The story is about a gay couple, Renalto Baldi (Ugo Tognazzi) and Albin Mougeotte (Michel Sarrault), who attempt to pass off as straight when Renalto's son Laurent (R''mi Laurent) announces his engagement and brings his fiancee's conservative parents (Carmen Scarpitta and Michel Galabru) home before the couple's wedding. Renalto is the owner of a nightclub called La Cage aux Folles, and Albin is the club's star attraction as a drag queen. Albin tries to play the part of Laurent's mother and Renalto attempts to act like his manly father. Complicating matters further, Laurent's real mother shows up, causing great confusion and comical implications. La Cage Aux Folles was directed by Edouard Molinaro, who adapted the screenplay with Jean Poiret, the playwright of the stage version.
