La Captive, an adaptation of Marcel Proust's "La Prisoniere" book five of his epic Rememberance of Things Past, is the story of the repercussions of obsessive love. Wealthy man Simon (Stanislas Merhar) is madly in love with Ariane (Sylvie Testud) but he does not trust her. He follows her every move hoping to catch her betraying his trust. They live together with her in voluntary captivity. She accepts her captivity and Simon's surveillance because she can maintain her privacy and freedom while living a lavish lifestyle in his labyrinthine Paris apartment. Indeed, though, Ariane is stepping out to sleep with other women leading to a dramatic confrontation. Told with wit and humor, La Captive speculates on the nature of love and trust. Does Simon love Ariane or simply want to possess her? Is Ariane a captive or a willing prisoner? Director Chantal Akerman's film is a fascinating portrait of modern love.
