1994
Rating:

Ladybird, Ladybird follows Maggie Conlan (Crissy Rock) as she fights with British Social Services over the care of her four children. Maggie has a history of bouncing from one abusive relationship to another. She has four children with four different men. The children are injured in a fire at a women's shelter, bringing the family to the attention of Social Services. The government steps in to investigate and declares Maggie an unfit mother, severing the parent-child relationship. But the good intentions of the agency fail to produce good results and the children become pawns in a struggle between mother and the bureaucracy. Crissy gets her life together and meets the man of her dreams, Jorge (Vladimir Vega). The two start a family, but Social Services has a long memory and attempts to take the baby from her. The couple have to fight Social Services to keep their young family together. Director Ken Loach infuses the film with social commentary to examine a government system and its flaws. Released in 1994, the film won two awards at the Berlin International Film Festival.moreless
