Land of Plenty is a 2004 drama and dark comedy directed by Wim Wenders. Lana (Michelle Williams) is a social worker who moves to Los Angeles to find her uncle, Paul (John Diehl). Lana has never really met Paul, but she knows that the two of them are not similar at all. While Lana grew up as a world traveler and is extremely conscious of cultural sensitivity and the importance of helping others, Paul is her exact opposite. After fighting in the Vietnam War, he has now found work as a security cop, although his bigoted and neurotic attitude towards anyone he deems "foreign" lands him in hot water. After the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, Lana and Paul are reacting in different ways. Lana has become even more compassionate and Paul has become even more paranoid. When the uncle and his niece finally connect, they are drawn together by an unexpected tragedy that helps them both grow and change their perceptions of America and the world.moreless

Hampered by an ending that overreaches needlessly, the film is nevertheless worthy and unmistakably the effort of an enduringly distinctive and important filmmaker.
