Last Resort is a 2000 romantic drama directed by Pawel Pawlikowski. In the film, Tanya (Dina Korzun) and her 10-year-old son, Artyom (Artyom Strelnikov), are fleeing Moscow, Russia, to meet Tanya's English boyfriend and start a new life in London. When the pair arrives at the London airport, Tanya's boyfriend is not there. After spending some time waiting for him they realize he is not coming. Since they have nowhere to go, Immigration officials want to send them back to Russia immediately. Tanya does not want them to return to Moscow so she panics and asks for political asylum, hoping this will buy her some time to figure out a new plan. The officials agree to start paperwork for them but warn it can take more than a year to receive a reply. As a last resort, Tanya and her son are sent to a fenced-in seaside holding area in Northern England.

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

This is the best class of poetic realism, the kind you can believe in without a trace of hesitation.

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

I like the way Last Resort ends, how it concludes its emotional journey without pretending the underlying story is over. You walk out of the theater curiously touched.

  • 70

The New York Times Dana Stevens

Though Last Resort dwells on sorrowful circumstances and illuminates a grim corner of contemporary reality, it is far from depressing.
