Laughing Matters is a 2004 film featuring lesbian stand-up comics Kate Clinton, Marga Gomez, Suzanne Westenhoeffer, and Karen Williams. Considered trailblazers in the world of stand-up lesbian comics, these women are credited with having open doors for a whole new generation of stand-ups. Having launched their career in the 80's, when there was practically no audience for gay females, the comics gained a huge following performing in gay night clubs. The women put a hilarious spin on such topics as the Catholic Church, family, Martha Stewart, sex, coming out, airport security and aging. They also talks about rigors and rewards of breaking into an industry rife with prejudice and sexism. All of the women pay special homage to Ellen DeGeneres and credit her with helping lesbians gain more acceptance in the realm of comedy. The Q and A session also offers deeper insight into the pride and courage of these women.
