Laurence Olivier's Hamlet is about the fifteenth century Denmark Prince Hamlet (Laurence Olivier), who vows to avenge his father's death. Claudius (Basil Sydney), the king's own brother, poisoned the king craving the power that comes with the throne, as well as Queen Gertrude (Eileen Herlie). The murder haunts young Hamlet, and he begins seeing the ghost of his dead father. Hamlet schemes to take revenge, but allows his anguish and indecision to lead to more internal problems. He cannot get over the fact that his mother married so untimely and hastily after the death of his father. While conversing with his mother, Hamlet mistakenly thinks Claudius is spying on them and kills an innocent counselor.
