Layer Cake, sometimes written as L4YER CAK'', is a British crime-drama directed by Matthew Vaughn. It is the story of Mr. X (Daniel Craig), a wealthy and successful drug dealer. Unlike many of his colleagues, X has not fallen into the typical gangster lifestyle of a drug dealer. He treats the whole thing as a business, buying, cutting and selling cocaine on the streets of London with enviable efficiency. Having made his fortune, X plans to retire from the business for good. His supplier, Jimmy Price (Kenneth Carnham), sends X on one more mission: To find the daughter of Eddie Temple (Michael Gambon) and bring her safely back. At around the same time, Price pushes X to buy and distribute one million ecstasy pills around London. Only after the deal is made, does X find out that the pills were stolen from a gang of Holland-based Serbian drug dealers. He goes on the run, only to face more betrayal from those he thought he could trust.moreless

The newest in British gangland entertainment and the tastiest in years.

    Variety

There's a proper lived-in believability about Layer Cake's depiction of how the worlds of the rich, the criminal and the criminally rich intersect.

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

A sleek, effective entertainment that is a refreshing respite from the slick emptiness of recent American crime dramas.
