Leather Saint, a film produced by Paramount Pictures in 1956, tells the heart-warming and dramatic story of an Episcopalian priest fighting for glory. Father Gil Allen (John Derek) is an Episcopalian minister who used to box in college. He stays active by visiting a gym owned by his friend, Tom Kelly (Richard Shannon). The fight manager at this gym, Gus MacAuliffe (Paul Douglas) suggests to Father Allen that he enter some boxing matches. Father Allen declines at first, hesitant to box because of his profession as a minister. After thinking of the equipment and resources the match winnings could buy for his community, Father Allen decides to participate in the boxing matches without revealing his identity. Allen wins his first match, knocking out the competitor with just one hit. Feeling conflicted about his true profession as a priest, Father Allen wants to hang up his boxing gloves but discovers that Father Ritchie (Ernest Truex) has already put down payments on needed items. Compelled to continue fighting for the good of his community, the movie chronicles Father Allen's adventures in the boxing ring as he experiences inner turmoil and personal triumphs.moreless
