Legend Of The Lost is a dazzling western about a group of travelers on an expedition through the Sahara. Ten years after his father didn't return from an expedition through the desert in Libya, devoutly religious Paul Bonnard (Rossano Brazzi) sets out to find riches in an ancient city of Timgrad, finishing his father's mission. He enlists the help of Joe January (John Wayne), a gruff booze hound, to guide him through the ruthless terrain; the two men are also accompanied by Dita (Sophia Loren), a seductive prostitute who shares a mutual attraction with Bonnard. The group's journey certainly proves to be no picnic, but when the oddly formed trio reach their destination, a surprising discovery by Bonnard throws the trip completely off course, and threatens to keep them all from making it back alive. Henry Hathaway directs this first and only pairing of Wayne and Loren on film, known for its breathtaking cinematography by Jack Cardiff.
