Leo the Last features the world-weary heir to the throne, Prince Leo (Marcello Mastroianni), as he returns from his many travels to seek some peaceful time at his father's house in West England. Accompanying him are his betrothed, the status-seeking Margaret (Billie Whitelaw), and the politically minded Laszlo (Vladek Sheybal), who is plotting an uprising to instate Prince Leo as the country's rightful king. Prince Leo is shocked to find that this once exclusive neighborhood has become a slum; a ghetto teeming with poverty, violence, and an overall lack of justice. His windowpane observations lead him to sympathize with his neighbor, the young Salambo Mardi (Glenna Forster-Jones) and her family. The Prince becomes emotionally attached to the beautiful girl, and when he realizes the depths of her suffering, a long silent wave of emotion takes over. The Prince is incited to help the young girl, and so he steps into the unlikely position of a revolutionary, much to the chagrin of his high-class entourage.moreless
