Leona's Sister Gerri is a documentary film that takes a look at America's past to find the motivation behind a hot political issue that's relevant today. Filmmaker Jane Gillooly brings into the spotlight the life of Gerri Santoro, a woman who died from an abortion before it was legal in the U.S., as seen through the eyes of her sister Leona. The film starts with Leona remembering opening a magazine in 1974 and seeing her sister naked and dead on a Norwich, CT, motel room floor. She tells Gillolly that she did not know the photos of her sister's death were communal property. At the time, Leona was outraged that Ms. Magazine made her sister's life public. Leona then starts to narrate Gerri's life, which began in Connecticut in 1935 and left her married to an abusive husband. Throughout the rest of the film, Leona continues with Gerri's heartbreaking story. She also gives the director her thoughts on Clyde Dixon, the man who murdered her sister. Gillooly's film shows audiences how one simple photo sparked the entire pro-choice moment in America.moreless
