Les Voleurs, or Thieves, is a 1996 French film noir directed by Andr'' T''chin''. In the middle of the night, two strangers bring the dead body of Ivan (Didier Bezace) home to his wife Mireille (Fabienne Babe). The story of Ivan's life and death is told through flashbacks and flash-forwards from the perspectives of four different people -- Ivan's son, Justin (Julien Rivi''re), Ivan's brother, Alex (Daniel Auteuil), Ivan's girlfriend, Juliette (Laurence C''te), and Juliette's lover, Marie (Catherine Deneuve). During Ivan's life, Alex, a police officer, clashes with Ivan, who is a corrupt crime boss and leader of a car theft ring. After Ivan's death, the lives and relationships of all the people who knew him will never be the same again. Les Voleurs explores the themes of jealousy, love and the intricate bonds between families in a gritty, realistic way. Many critics compare the odd narrative structure of this film to William Faulkner's classic novel The Sound and the Fury.
