Lessons of Darkness presents the consequences of the Gulf War in 1992 Kuwait. Directed by visionary Werner Herzog (Aquirre: The Wrath of God, Fitzcarraldo), this documentary makes use of footage showing the effects of the Gulf War. Herzog uses creative camera techniques to tell his story to the viewer. The unseen narrator presents haunting images such as the Kuwaiti oil fires almost without commentary. The images, accompanied by odd quotes and Wagnerian music, are at the same time confusing and unsettling. A bizarre combination of spirituality and science fiction frames the epic story. The film and the viewer are completely separated from the reality of the events. By taking the footage out of its context, Herzog shows the fantastic and otherworldly nature of what is happening. Herzog presents Kuwait as an alien planet populated by insane, destructive creatures. Herzog's films are remarkable and memorable, and Lessons of Darkness is no exception.
