Life is a comedy movie starring Eddie Murphy as the fast talking con-artist Rayford Gibson and Martin Lawrence as conservative bank teller Claude Banks, an unlikely pair who end up in some deep trouble. Ray is a small-time hustler, and Claude is trying to make something of himself as a bank teller. When the two are at a club called Spanky's, Ray picks Claude to pick-pocket, but they both end up in trouble with the club owner Spanky. Ray was running numbers on Spanky's territory, and enlists himself and Claude to do a bootlegging run to pay off their debt. Heading down south to buy a carload of Mississippi Hooch, the duo comes across a swindler who cheats in a card game against them and is murdered, and Ray and Claude are blamed for the crime. They are sentenced to life in prison, in an infamous prison camp called "Camp 8". The two try to clear their names and break out of prison, with comedic misadventures along the way. Metacritic Score

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The movie is ribald, funny and sometimes sweet, and well acted by Murphy, Lawrence and a strong supporting cast.

  • 70

The New York Times Elvis Mitchell

Lawrence and Murphy make an entertaining team. And they are surrounded by a supporting cast that makes the prison setting more pleasant than it has any right to be.

  • 70

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Careens from decade to decade, and from relative dramatic realism to frequent hilarity, in often-winning fashion.
