Lionel Hampton: Swinging at His Best is a film documentary about jazz musician Lionel Hampton. The documentary captures the raw energy and power of his vibraphone playing during the swing era of jazz. Known as the "King of the Vibes" during his time, he was instrumental in pushing the instrumentent, and consequently himself as a musician, to the forefront of jazz music. Lionel Hampton: Swinging at His Best collects his best and most sought-out performances and appearances. Beginning as a drummer before moving onto the vibraphone, Lionel Hampton was also a proficient pianist, percussionist, bandleader, as well as an actor. Before his death in 2002, Lionel Hampton was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. During his long and celebrated career he performed with many jazz great, himself included in that small group, including Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich and Quincy Jones.
