Lion's Den is a dramatic film that shows even bars cannot weaken the bond between a mother and her son. The movie begins with Julia Zarate (Martine Gusman) waking up in her Argentina apartment covered in blood and unsure of the events that took place. She soon realizes that her boyfriend Nahuel is lying on the floor with a fatal knife wound while his friend Romiro (Rodrigo Santoro) is critically wounded also with a knife wound. Unable to remember most of what has happened, Julia quickly finds herself incarcerated. After it is determined that Julia is pregnant, she is moved to a penitentiary for mothers and pregnant women. Julia slips into a depression and isolates herself from the other women until the birth of her child. Once her son Tomas (Tomas Plotinsky) is born, Julia's maternal instinct kicks in and she unexpectedly grows incredibly attached to him. Cellmate Sofia (Elli Medeiros) becomes a strong support system for Julia and the two start a romantic love affair. According to Argentina law, a child is removed from his mother in prison at the age of four and as Tomas grows older Julia is unsure she can let him go. She decides to stand up and fight the system and her mother (Laura Garcia) for the right to keep her son with her. The debate over a mother's right to keep her son versus the child's right to live in freedom pursues and each side is ready to fight to the end.moreless
