Little Men is a 1940 adaptation of the 1871 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott. After swindler Major Burdle (George Bancroft) is unexpectedly tasked with the responsibility of caring for young Danny (Jimmy Lydon), he decides to denounce his dishonest ways while raising the boy. When Danny becomes a teenager, state officials force Major Burdle to give him an education by enrolling him at Plumfield School, a boarding school run by Jo (Kay Francis) and her husband Professor Bhaer (Carl Esmond). Although rebellious Danny initially has a difficult time fitting in at the institution, he soon forms a close bond with patient Jo, who acts as a mother figure to him. When Jo and Professor Bhaer are at risk of losing their school to foreclosure, Major Burdle tries to help them by investing their savings in a bank that fails. With the help of his old henchman, Willie the Fox (Jack Oakie), Major Burdle decides to delve into criminal activities once more in order to get the money back.moreless
