Little Men is a 1998 drama directed by Rodney Gibbons and based on the novel by Louisa May Alcott. In Concord, Massachusetts, 1871, Jo (Mariel Hemingway) has grown from a rebellious, boisterous girl into a smart and caring woman. Together with her husband, Professor Fritz Bhaer (Chris Sarandon), Jo runs Plumfield, a progressive school for boys. Although some of her students are from wealthy families, others come from broken homes. The school is often energetic and rambunctious, but the Bhaers treat all the students like their own children. One day, Plumfield sees two new arrivals who might change things forever. Nat (Michael Caloz) is shy, artistic and sensitive. He is amazed to find a place where adults will treat him with respect and sensitivity, so different from his dangerous life as a pickpocket on the streets. Dan (Ben Cook) is also an orphan, but he is less sure about the school. Dan's sullen attitude and wild side threatens to get Nat into trouble too, especially when the two new arrivals fail to get along with the other students. Jo and her husband hope they can bring the two boys around to a gentler, happier way of life, but they may be too late.moreless
