Little Miss Sunshine is an Academy Award-winning, dark comedy about a dysfunctional family's road trip to a beauty pageant. Seven-year-old Olive Hoover (Abigail Breslin) is thrilled to learn that she has qualified to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine beauty contest held in California. The Hoover family lives in New Mexico, however, and money is tight, so the only way Olive can compete is if the entire Hoover clan drives to California to support her. Olive piles into the family's dilapidated Volkswagen bus with her out-of-work father Richard (Greg Kinnear), her overworked mother Sheryl (Toni Colette), her Nietzsche-quoting half-brother Dwayne (Paul Dano), her suicidal uncle Frank (Steve Carell), and her foul-mouthed grandfather Edwin (Alan Arkin). Crammed into the small bus for hours on end, the family members quickly start to grate on each other's nerves. When their old Volkswagen develops mechanical issues, the Hoovers are fighting the clock as well as each other as they race to get Olive to her pageant on time.moreless
