Local Color is a touching film about a young artist who looks for inspiration from an aging painter. John Talia Jr. (Trevor Morgan) is in love with painting. He wants nothing more than to study and improve his craft, for better or worse, and much to the dismay of his slightly homophobic father, John Sr. (Ray Liotta). On a trip to visit a friend, he learns that Nicholi Seroff, (Armin Mueller-Stahl) a master Russian painter, lives in the neighborhood. But when John pays a visit to Seroff, expecting to meet an enigmatic genius, he finds that the old painter is bitter and in the throws of alcoholism, wanting simply to go to his home in countryside of Pennsylvania. Against stern opposition from his father, John travels with Seroff, where he not only receives instruction from the old master, but befriends the young and beautiful Carla, (Samantha Mathis) a woman mourning the death of her son. As the time passes, and the often painstaking lessons commence, John and Seroff learn a great deal from one another; John begins to harness his inner creativity and talent, and Seroff again is able to look through a harsh world and find beauty inside it. George Gallo directs the award winning Local Color, an unconventional and very introspective look at ourselves through the eyes of an unexpected friendship.moreless
