Lone Star is an American film released in 1996. It was written and directed by John Sayles and starred Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, Matthew McConaughey and Elizabeth Pena. Set in Texas, the film opens with the discovery of a human skull. Sheriff Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper) begins an investigation into the identity of the skull and determines that it is Sheriff Charlie Wade (Kris Kristofferson), a corrupt man who was killed forty years earlier. As the investigation continues, Sam Deeds begins to believe that his father, former Sheriff Buddy Deeds (Matthew McConaughey) may have been involved in the murder. At the same time, Sam learns other things about his father that threaten the relationship that he is renewing with his high school sweetheart, Pilar Cruz (Elizabeth Pena). Lone Star received excellent reviews upon its release and was one of Sayles' best box-office performers, earning over twelve million dollars on a budget of only five million.
