Lonelyhearts is a 1958 film directed by Vincent J. Donehue. The drama surrounds writer Adam White (Montgomery Clift) who gets his first job writing an advice column for a local newspaper. He is assigned the job by his cynical boss William Shrike (Robert Ryan) who wants to give the idealistic young writer a dose of reality. Shrike is holding a ten-year-old grudge over his wife's (Myrna Loy) infidelity and is intent on making everyone around him suffer. However, he does not know that Adam has secrets of his own and that his life is not as perfect as it seems. Adam also struggles with his inability to help any of his readers and decides to meet one of the letter writers, Fay Doyle (Maureen Stapleton). Fay has a handicapped husband and admits that the two of them have not been intimate for years.
