the film deals with Teresa Dunn (Diane Keaton, The Godfather, Something's Gotta Give, The First Wives Club), a young teacher of deaf children starting out in her NYC apartment. James (William Atherton, Ghostbusters, The Sugarland Express, Die Hard, Buried Alive) is a young priest who wants to marry her. He cares for his elderly mother, is old-fashioned, and could probably lift Teresa out of her self-destruction. Teresa's sister Katherine (Tuesday Weld, Once Upon a Time in America, Falling Down, Thief) is a misguided woman who dumps her husband and eventually flies to Puerto Rico to get an abortion. Teresa's Irish Catholic father (Richard Kiley) tells her she can do as she wishes...is free to ruin her life, or go to hell... The other parts of Teresa's life, when she is not teaching, are filled with men, singles bars, and Tony LoPanto (Richard Gere, Pretty Woman, An Officer and a Gentleman, American Gigolo).
