Lorna's Silence is a 2009 Belgian film about the difficult choices a young woman faces to gain her Belgian citizenship. Lorna (Arta Dobroshi) is an Albanian immigrant who has gained legal residency in Belgium through a sham marriage to a heroin addict named Claudy (Jeremie Renier). Claudy was paid off by the Russian mafia to marry Lorna, but unknown to him, the plan is to allow him to overdose with Lorna's help. Then Lorna, with a full widow's citizenship, can marry a Russian mobster also seeking citizenship. The plan goes awry, however, when Claudy begins to clean up his act through Lorna's influence. Facing a moral quandary, Lorna's compassion for Claudy will not only jeopardize her citizenship, and her plans to open a snack bar with the money she will receive, but it will also endanger her life. Will Lorna's conscience allow her watch a man die? Lorna's Silence was written and directed by the celebrated Belgian filmmakers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne.moreless
