The film sees Carol (Ann Harding), a young working girl from London, win a small fortune in a French lottery. She immediately quits her job and expects her fianc'' Ronald (Bruce Seton) to do the same. When he refuses, she ends their relationship. After the break-up, Carol decides to go to France to collect her lottery winnings and live in luxury, so she puts her flat up for rent. Gerald (Basil Rathbone) shows up to inspect the flat. He is a charming, romantic, mysterious gentleman and after another chance meeting, it isn't long before Carol falls in love. Despite warnings from her friends, Carol marries Gerald.
