Love is the Devil is a 1998 film by John Maybury that is about the twisted life and love of the famous 20th century painter Francis Bacon. It is filmed in strange ways to emulate the painful and horrific visuals Bacon himself attained in his famous paintings. The film is set in the 60s and opens with a burglar (played by current James Bond actor Daniel Craig) breaking into Bacon's apartment. Bacon surprises the burglar by not calling the cops and instead invites the burglar into his bed. The burglar, a poor worker named George Dyer, accepts, even though he is 30 years younger than Bacon. Bacon is drawn to Dyer's strange mixture of innocence and amorality and a torrid affair between the two grows. Over time Dyer falls for Bacon, but Bacon stays aloof, engaging in casual infidelities often. Dyer falls into a depression and drinks and takes pills. Bacon however feeds off Dyer's torturous life, using it to his advantage in his paintings.moreless
