Love Me or Leave Me, directed by Charles Vidor, is a 1955 dramatic musical biography of Ruth Etting (Doris Day). The story was written by Daniel Fuchs and Isobel Lennart and chronicles Etting's career from her first days as a taxi dancer to her rise as an astounding jazz singing sensation. Etting's career is unique because of her relationship with her first husband, Marty "Moe the Gimp" Snyder (James Cagney). Moe the Gimp is a hardcore Chicago gangster who manipulated Etting into marrying him and became her manager. Etting's husband was able to accelerate her path to becoming a star, but he was also emotionally and physically abusive. Their relationship was further complicated because of her relationship with Mylr Alderman (Cameron Mitchell), a pianist. Etting cared deeply for Alderman but she also wanted to be a star. Will Etting choose true love over being a star, or will she stay with a man she doesn't love?moreless
