Lover Come Back is the second movie to combine the on-screen comedic talents of Rock Hudson, Doris Day, and Tony Randall, with a script that earned writers Stanley Shapiro and Paul Henning an Oscar nomination. The plot revolves around a case of mistaken identity, with Jerry Webster (Rock Hudson) and Carol Templeton (Doris Day) playing rival Madison Avenue advertising executives. Carol dislikes Jerry's method of securing agency contracts using attractive women and alcohol, rather than intelligence and hard work. When Jerry steals one of her clients, Carol vows revenge and reports him to the Advertising Council. Jerry tries to manipulate circumstances in his favor by bribing a chemist, Dr. Linus Tyler (Jack Kruschen), to create a nonexistent mystery product called VIP. Carol wines and dines the Doctor in an attempt to steal the VIP account, not realizing the Doctor is really Jerry. Jerry takes advantage of the situation and uses his charm to win her heart.
