Lover's Prayer is a romantic drama, set in 19th century Russia and based on the short story "The Peasant Women" by Anton Chekhov. Vladmir (Nick Stahl), who is young and tender hearted finds himself falling rapidly in love with Zinaida (Kirsten Dunst). Vladmir is a pale, sickly lad and cannot find the courage to tell Zinaida how he feels, so instead he follows her around and allows himself to become one among many admirers. Zinaida is the daughter of a princess, but finds very little to like about her position. Her mother, Princess Zasyekin (Julie Walters) is an alcoholic, and does nothing to restrain or support her daughter. As a result, Zinaida manipulates the men in her life to gain power and fulfill her own desires. When Vladmir discovers that Zinaida is having an affair with someone very close to him, it may be too much for their frail connection to withstand.
