Rating:

Lucky Number Slevin is an action packed thriller with many twists. Slevin Kelevra (Josh Harnett) suffers from a case of mistaken identity when he goes to crash at his friend's, Nick Fisher (Sam Jaeger), apartment in New York City. Two rival gangs rule the city, led by The Rabbi (Sir Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freedman). Nick has racked up massive gambling debts with both crime bosses, who mistake Slevin for Nick. The Boss proposes settling the debt by hiring Slevin as a hitman against The Rabbi's son. The Rabbi also gets a hold of Slevin, threatening him. Out of the shadows, a hitman called Goodkat (Bruce Willis) appears and is aware that Slevin is not Nick. As Slevin must decide which mob to form an alliance with, police Detective Brikowsi (Stanley Tucci) informs him that he is investigating both mobs. The film splices scenes erratically and everything falls beautifully into place at the end.

Metacritic Score

  • 60

The New York Times Stephen Holden

From its sly, amused performances to its surreal comic book gloss to its artfully nervous camerawork, Lucky Number Slevin sustains the blasé tone and look of a smart-aleck thrille...

  • 60

    Variety Justin Chang

Thoroughly -- and sometimes justifiably -- infatuated with its own cleverness, this mistaken-identity thriller delights in narrative complication and Tarantino-esque self-awareness.

  • 50

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

Lucky Number Slevin is an attempted cinematic sleight-of-hand that has its moments, but is finally just plain annoying, wearing its influences too broadly on its sleeve.
